One of the many plans the folks at TweetDeck have for their desktop and mobile Twitter clients now includes launching themed versions of film clients.

TweetDeck kicked off the series with a Warner Brothers partnership for the studio’s upcoming film version of Sherlock Holmes — the accompanying theme, “TweetDeck Telegram Co.,” is now available for download.

The skin features a classic black and white theme to take you back “to a time before coloured avatars, shiny interfaces and rounded corners.” It also integrates with an interactive game being released to promote the film, called 221b. The two-player online game takes you and a friend through the events leading up to the first scene of the movie.

TweetDeck says it will be partnering with record labels, bands, movie studios and other media companies to release more themes over the coming year. (In the past, TweetDeck has created skins for bands like Blink 182 as well as Mashable.) Each will present a custom look and feel as well as a dedicated channel for the artist or film alongside the user’s existing TweetDeck columns. In the Sherlock Holmes theme, the dedicated channel features a window into the 221b game.

The new skinning strategy seems like an interesting and sensible business model for TweetDeck. For fans of the partnered artists and movies, themes could offer a fun and relevant way to keep tabs on a favorite band or upcoming release. Users tend to appreciate the opportunity to customize their apps and experiences, and sensible tie-ins with popular media franchises that many people will want to socialize anyway will likely make useful enhancements for fans.

Will you make use of the Sherlock Holmes TweetDeck theme? What other themes would you like to see adorn your Twitter client in the coming year?

A lot has changed with marketing since the dot-com bowl and even more since 1987 when soft-drink giant Pepsi first started their 23 year Super Bowl ad streak. For one, Michael J. Fox used to be featured in Pepsi ads.

By now you’ve probably heard all about what Pepsi is not spending their money on this year. Let’s talk about where their money is going instead: The Pepsi Refresh Project.

Pepsi Experimenting with the Viral Power of Charitable Ideas

Pepsi is foregoing their annual Super Bowl ad in order to invest more money a multi-million-dollar charitable grant program called “Pepsi Refresh Project.” Starting January 16th, people will be able to create “refresh” communities online, post content, and vote for which community project they’d like to see Pepsi invest in.

Edward Boches of Mullen recently composed a post about how crowdfunding is a growing trend among B2C businesses including sporting retail giant Land’s End. Similarly, Pepsi appears experimenting the power of the crowd. Except instead of taking donations from a large number of individuals, they’re sourcing ideas . Using the Pepsi’s Refresh Project people can create communities which pitch ideas for charitable projects. People vote on the ideas and Pepsi makes those projects a reality. What Pepsi is most likely counting on is the reach of individuals to their networks. People push their “refresh” ideas to their networks through social media in order to generate more votes and in turn, more love for the Pepsi brand.

A quick look at the current Pepsi Refresh homepage reveals the outline of a community that will encourage Social Media participation including tweets, video, and photos from users. If RefreshEverything.com takes off, they may be well on their way to mastering the multifaceted social media approach in the future.

One thing is for certain though: It’s an exciting time for marketers when a mega-company like Pepsi generates more buzz when they don’t spend 3-million dollars on Superbowl ads than when they do.

Depending on the size and nature of a public offering, it may be necessary to hire a separate investor relations firm. In many instances, both direct and initial public offerings can benefit from the services of professional investor relations assistance.

For a company going public with an initial public offering, the decision to hire an investor relations firm will probably depend on the company's ability to internalize the function or the underwriting firm's ability to provide the service. Because an investor relations firm can be very important in the establishment and maintenance of relationships within the financial community, many corporations opt to hire a firm that specializes in such tasks. In some cases, companies may opt to hire out this function in hopes of gaining additional contacts through the investor relations firm.

The function of a good investor relations firm is relatively straightforward. The investor relations firm serves as a highly visiblepoint of contact for interested investors and members of the press, answering questions and providing information as necessary. These goals are often accomplished through a combination of internet resources, press releases, webcasts, and phone calls. Brochures and other types of corporate collateral are also the responsibility of the investor relations firm. This includes the fact sheets, presentation materials, and earnings releases that are necessary before an offering.

Prior to an initial public offering, the role of the investor relations firm is especially critical. A good firm can play a major role in the success of an issue, creating an impression of success and stability for investors. Heavy roadshow support is a given with any investor relations firm, and the company may help compose various financial reports to present to prospective investors. Good firms will also help by arranging numerous meetings with potential investors, based on the preferences of the issuing company.

Because direct public offerings are generally used by companies with smaller capital needs, the use of an investor relations firm is somewhat less common. Regardless, its function is just as important to a smaller company as it is for a company seeking funds through an initial public offering. With a direct public offering, there is no underwriter to guarantee sales, so full responsibility for the success of the issue lies with the issuing corporation.

Because the process of issuing and selling public shares is time-consuming and stressful, it may be beneficial to enlist the aid of an outside investor relations firm to help with marketing the issue and communicating with investors. In addition to easing the stress, the use of an investor relations firm can help a corporation appear more professional to investors, creating a greater image of stability and profitability.

It's not impossible for an issue to be successful without the aid of an investor relations firm, but success is certainly more likely with one. By allowing capable hands to take over investor relations functions, the corporation can focus on other important tasks at hand before the issue.
